A plane with 72 people on board crashed in Nepal on Sunday, January 15, announced Sudarshan Bartaula, head of security and spokesperson for the Yeti Airlines company. “There are 68 passengers on board and four crew members … The emergency services are on the way, we do not currently know if there are survivors,” he told the France-Presse agency (AFP ).

The cabin was on fire and the rescuers were trying to turn off the fire, said Gurudutta Dhakal, a local official. “Rescue have already arrived on the spot and try to turn off the fire,” added Mr. Dhakal, adding that they “concentrate] on the extinction of the fire and on the rescue of the passengers”.

a new Nepalese aerial industry

The plane crashed between the old and the new Pokhara airport in the center of Nepal.

The Nepalese airline has been boomed in recent years, especially in the transport of goods and people in regions that are difficult to access, as well as hikers with trek and mountaineers of all nationalities. But it suffers from a lack of security due to insufficient training and maintenance, which is why the European Union has prohibited all Nepalese carriers from accessing its airspace.

The Himalayan country also has some of the most isolated tracks in the world, surrounded by snowy peaks that make the approach difficult, even for experienced pilots.

Aircraft operators claim that Nepal does not have infrastructure to establish precise weather forecasts, in particular in the regions remote to the accident mountainous relief, where fatal accidents have taken place in the past. The weather also quickly changes in the mountains, making the flight conditions difficult.
