He presented himself as the bearer of a hope both for the Brazilian people and for the planet. And was greeted by a huge fervor. Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, the elected president of Brazil, gave a speech worthy of a rock star at the World Conference on the Climate of Charm El-Cheikh (Egypt), Wednesday, November 16. Accompanied to the platform by Sameh Choukri, the president of the COP27 and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lula saw his name chanted by a crowd massaged in two attic rooms. Each of his promises, each of his good words, have been massively applauded, while the audience was singing the famous song “Olé Ola, Lula” of his Brazilian meetings.

“Brazil is back!” Launched the future president of the Latin American giant several times, dressed in his favorite, green and gold tie, which he sports for important moments. If the leader, who will take office on the 1 er January, chose the COP27 for his first trip abroad since his election at the end of October, it is to show that his country is ready to ” join the debates on the future of the planet “.

opposing the President Climatosceptique Jair Bolsonaro, who isolated Brazil on the international scene, Lula has promised to offer the “leadership” that the world needs. Not only to fight against the climate crisis, but also against poverty, hunger in the world and to bring about “a peaceful international order, based on dialogue, solidarity, multilateralism”.

Lula has reaffirmed that his priority will be to fight against deforestation in Amazon, haven of biodiversity and one of the greatest carbon wells on the planet. Under the mandate of Jair Bolsonaro, nearly 40,000 km 2 of forests have been shaved in four years in order to promote agro-industry and the mining sector, the equivalent of a country like Switzerland. So much so that this unique ecosystem would now approach a point of non-return, which would see large zones transform into savannah and release colossal quantities of co 2 .

Transformation of the Brazilian agricultural model

The elected president assured that he would hold his commitment to “zero deforestation”, promised to “punish” illegal activities and give back resources to environmental agencies. He also recalled his wish to create a ministry of indigenous peoples, which must be the “preservation actors” of the Amazon.

The future president has also emphasized the transformation of the agricultural model of Brazil: he pleaded for the financial valuation of soil protection, a way of making actors of agrobusiness of “strategic allies”. “We can continue to be one of the largest food producers in the world without deforesting one more hectare,” he said, while the country is an important exporter of beef, soy or sugar. During its two previous mandates, between 2003 and 2011, deforestation had decreased by 83 % while the gross domestic product in the agricultural sector increased by 75 %.
