The United States has left Afghanistan over a year ago, but still hear weighing on the fate of this country. Washington already uses the financial weapon by having frozen, on its soil, the funds of the Afghan central bank to sanction the capture of power by force, in August 2021, and the non-compliance of international standards on human rights. The American authorities are now increasing pressure by limiting the freedom of movement of Taliban chiefs around the world. Tuesday, October 11, the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, pronounced new sanctions to this effect, in retaliation for the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan.

The head of American diplomacy announced “restrictions on the granting of visas (…) to the current and former members of the Taliban and other individuals deemed responsible or accomplices of the repression of women and girls through restrictive policies and violence “. This decision was made on the occasion of tenth international day of girls . According to Mr. Blinken, Afghanistan remains, “for a year, the only country in the world where girls are systematically prohibited from access to school beyond the sixth grade, without a return date”.

In January 2019, then in full peace negotiations with Afghan Islamists, the United States had themselves endorsed the abolition of the qualifier “terrorist” applied to the Taliban. In the process, they had given the green light to the withdrawal of many of their leaders from the list of the UN Security Council sanctioning terrorist groups, opening these personalities again the possibility of traveling.

Surprise in Kabul

The UN political mission in Afghanistan has noted new repressive acts against Afghan women in recent weeks. Fearing that the revolt in Iran on the question of women would make oil in their country, the Taliban security forces would have been tracking for two weeks all forms of solidarity expressed in favor of the Iranian women. As of September 29, the Taliban had dispersed by shots in the air a rally in front of the Iran Embassy in Kabul. At the cries of “women, life, freedom”, in the Dari language, the Afghan Persian, around thirty women had been able to briefly be heard before being driven by Taliban guards. Some were hitting participants with their weapons after tearing off banners with slogans such as “Iran rises, now it’s our turn”, “from Kabul to Iran, say no to dictatorship!”
