Raspberry Pi OS Shifts to Debian 12, Pipewire and Wayland

The developers of the project Raspberry Pi raspberry Pi OS 2023-10-10 (raspbian), based on the DEBIAN package base, have released an update. Three different versions of the OS are available for download:

  • An abbreviated version (435 MB) for server systems
  • A version with a base desktop (1 GB)
  • A complete version with an additional set of applications (2.7 GB)

For installation from repositories, users have access to approximately 35 thousand packages.

Key changes in this update include:

  • The transition to the DEBIAN 12 package base, which was previously using Debian 11.
  • In the assemblies for Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5, the desktop components have been transferred to the OpenBox to the Wayfire composite manager. This enables the use of the Wayland protocol and allows for animated effects when opening and closing windows. The PCManfm file manager is still used to form the desktop, but it has been transferred to the use of Wayland. To support applications that only work with X11, a layer of XWALAND has been implemented. Users who prefer not to use Wayland can still use the Raspi-Config configurator to return to the X-server with the OpenBox window manager. The plan is to make Wayland the default
