Android 14: Second Preliminary Issue

Google has unveiled the second test version of Android 14, the open mobile platform. The release of Android 14 is expected in Q3 of 2023. The tech giant has urged developers to evaluate the new features of the platform by proposing a preliminary testing program. Firmware assemblies have been prepared for many Pixel models including the 7/7 Pro, 6/6a/6 Pro, 5/5a 5G, and 4A (5G).

Compared to the first preliminary version, Android 14 Developer Preview 2 has had changes such as continued work to improve the operation of the platform on tablets and devices with folding screens. Libraries providing predictive events associated with moving the pointer and low delays when working with the stylus have been introduced. Additionally, interface templates for large screens taking into account social networks, communications, multimedia content, reading and making purchases have also been provided.

Moreover, developers can now provide access to selected photographs or videos in the confirmation dialogue of the powers of access of applications to multimedia files. Android 14 also has a new feature on the configurator, which has added a section of the reduction of settings of regional preferences, such as temperature units, the first day of the week, and the number system, in order to cater to European users living in America. The new update also includes continued improvements to Credential Manager and related APIs, allowing easier access to external authentication providers.

The updated features on Android 14 Developer Preview 2 will continue to move the technology towards a more user-friendly experience. With information already downloadable, developers can begin to assess how to upgrade apps for optimal results.
