Spa Studios opened code of internal Blender fork with improvements to Grease Pencil

Spanish animated studio spa studios , which was famous thanks to the cartoon “ Klaus “, opened source codes your internal Foam of 3D modeling Blender and related additions. Fork developed in the bowels of the studio for more than a year in the process of working on the new cartoon “Embber” and was for the first time announced at the conference of Blendercon in October 2022.

Fork developers directly contacted the studio artists, realizing the necessary functionality taking into account their wishes and difficulties that had to face the Blender use when creating an animated film. As a result, new tools and modifications of the interface of the two-dimensional drawing and animation system Grease Pencil were added, which made it possible to ensure the comfortable operation of the 2D animators in the program.

The main changes make -ase peencil:

  • Support for rotation/mirror reflection of 2D-vuhport.
  • compact dock for manipulating layers/drawings/materials /…
  • The ability to highlight the layer/object by click (+Modifier key) in the corresponding figure on canvas.
  • The ability to “muffle” the color of the currently inactive layers/objects.
  • Tool for changing the pattern (discharge) without exit from the DRAW MODE (analogue of Transform Tool from Photoshop/Krita).
  • The “Shift and Trace” tool allows you to temporarily move any drawing to a new place/frame in order to circle it (this technique is distributed by 2D animators), and after stroke, restore the original drawing in the same place.
  • “PEGBARS” tool allows you to add the additional layer of Transform animations (shift/turn/scale ..) to the existing drawn layer.
  • Convenient insert and manipulation of images-references for stroke.

Open addition adds the ability to mount Blender (VSE) in real time any Blender scenes (3D/Grease Pencil, etc.) without preliminary rendering of them in intermediate video files.

At the conference, it was also stated that work was underway to significantly increase the speed of Grease Pensil when working with a large number of objects/vertex (it is not known whether these changes were included in the open Fork). In addition, Falk David, one of the developers of the published Fork, returns to work in the Blender developer and the community coordinator in the Grease Pensil team
