The Parliament of Morocco unanimously rejected Monday, January 23, the “fallacious” accusations of European deputies on Monday, January 23 and any “interference” in the affairs of the kingdom, in response to a resolution of the European Parliament concerning the deterioration of the freedom of the press in the country.

The two chambers of Parliament met in plenary session in Rabat to “assess” the resolution of the European Parliament (PE), which has also worried the allegations of corruption weighing on this country.

“MEPs [of MEPs] will not intimidate us and we are not going to change our trajectory and our approaches,” said Mohamed Ghiat, President of the National Independent Rally (RNI) group, the main party majority.

The resolution of the PE is “a desperate attempt to influence independent Moroccan justice” and a “violation of the sovereignty of a partner country”, added Ahmed Touizi, of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), another training of the government coalition.

The case of Omar Radi

Echoing several parliamentarians, Mr. Touizi accused France – without quoting it – of being at the origin of an antimarocaine campaign in Brussels. “Behind the scenes of this decision hides a country that was believed to be a safe friend and partner, but the smell of gas made him lose his head,” he opined, in reference to the rapprochement between Paris and Algiers .

In a text adopted by a large majority last week in Strasbourg, the European Parliament enjoined the Moroccan authorities to “respect freedom of expression and freedom of the media” and to put an end to the “harassment of all journalists “.

The MEPs highlighted the case of Omar Radi, an independent 36 -year -old journalist criticized towards power, sentenced to six years in prison for “rape” and “espionage”, accusations he denies. They also said themselves “deeply concerned” by “the allegations according to which the Moroccan authorities would have corrupted deputies in the European Parliament”.

Monday, all parliamentary groups found themselves to denounce the “foreign diktats” and “interference in the independent judicial system” Moroccan. A few votes, on the left, were nevertheless raised to claim “the release of all political prisoners”.
