Thirty-three percent of French women claim to have had sex when they did not feel like it, evoking the insistence of their partner. And more than a third of them (37 %) testify to having already experienced a situation of non-consent in terms of sexual level. Opposite, only 12 % of men admit that they have insisted on sex when they knew that their partner did not want to. These are some of the highlights of the second annual barometer on sexism made public, Monday, January 23, by the High Council for Equality (HCE) between women and men.

The independent advisory organization, responsible for orienting government policy in terms of equality, is based on this representative survey (carried out online with 2,500 people by the Viavoice Institute) and on His expertise to present his fifth state of the sexism in France. The objective is twofold: Understanding the perception and reaction of our society in the face of gender inequalities, and document the “terrible” experience of women. 2> “Very anchored sexism behaviors”

Many cases, ranging from ordinary sexism to sexual violence, are reviewed. Beyond non-consent, novelty of this edition, the responses on sexual violence are in line with previous surveys, and confirm their magnitude: 14 % of women say they have undergone an “imposed sex”, Rape or sexual assault, a percentage that climbs to 22 % among those aged 18 to 24.

As it already did last year, the HCE points to an ambivalence. “This barometer shows both an opinion generally acquired by equal rights, aware of the fight against sexism and violence against women, and at the same time it reveals very anchored sexism behaviors, especially in young men “, analyzes Sylvie Pierre-Brossolette, its president.

The perception difference according to the genre of respondents is recurrent throughout the barometer. He is expressed in an almost caricatural way on certain questions; When 77 % of women believe sexist that a man comments on a woman’s dress, the rate of positive responses falls 20 points in the male gent. Another example: is it problematic that a woman cooks every day for her family? Yes, answer 49 % of women and… 37 % of men.

According to Maïder Beffa, associate director of the Viavoice Institute, “the answers reveal a form of male indifference compared to situations of ordinary sexism as well as difficult for men to accept a collective responsibility”.
