Developers of the project Nitter have been issued a notice by X Corp, the company managing the social network X (Twitter), demanding an end to their activities due to alleged illegalities (cease and desist), threatening legal action. Nitter provided an alternative platform for viewing X social network messages without the need for an account, and created a free (GPLv3) frontend for accessing X.com without JavaScript, analytics, trackers, or third-party services.
In order to avoid legal repercussions, the nitter.net website has ceased operations, halting further development, and the project’s GitHub repository has been archived. The project’s website currently states that the author is refraining from commenting on the situation until consulting with legal counsel.
A similar notice was also sent to the service XCancel, which allowed users to view messages from X.com. Operations of XCancel have been terminated, and further details are being kept confidential pending consultation with legal advisors.
