VirtualBox 7.2.12 Update Fixes Host System Freeze Issue

Oracle has released version 7.2.12 of the virtualization system VirtualBox, implementing 3 key changes. One of the notable fixes for Linux host environments addresses an issue that was causing the Linux kernel to crash or the system to hang when launching a virtual machine, leading to panic states. Specifically, users of Debian 13, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Fedora 44, and other distributions experienced freezing when using VirtualBox 7.2.10 due to a setting in the kvm module.

To work around this problem, users are advised to launch the kvm module without the “enable_virt_at_load=0” option, either by adjusting settings in /etc/modprobe.d/virtualbox.conf or /usr/lib/virtualbox-dkms.conf, or by unloading the kvm_intel and kvm_amd kernel modules. Additionally, VirtualBox 7.2.12 resolves issues with building NASM in add-ons for Linux guest systems and host environments, while also updating Windows guest additions to enhance DX11 performance.
