The lightweight music player Audacious 4.6 has been released, stemming from the Beep Media Player (BMP) project and a fork of the classic XMMS player. This release includes two user interfaces: GTK based and Qt based. Ready builds will soon be prepared for various Linux distributions (snap, flatpak, PPA) and for Windows.
Basic news on Audacious 4.6:
- Added plugin for file system navigation.
- A Playback History plugin has been implemented, providing an interface for viewing playback history using the GTK library.
- Added setting to force work via Xwayland in Wayland-based environments. This setting is activated by default on systems with older versions of Qt and when enabling a Winamp-style interface that does not support Wayland.
- Added the ability to sort playlist items by bitrate.
- Added an option to export playlists to the audtool command line utility.
- Added support for playing files in the Musepack SV8 format.
- Added support for all MIME types and format extensions AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format).
- Implemented sorting functionality for files by creation or modification time.
- Added support for reading tags with lyrics from Opus, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC files. The types of files for which tags with information about loudness normalization (ReplayGain) are read have been expanded.
- The Qt-based interface now supports moving files with the mouse to the main window from other applications.
- For the macOS platform, the “Now Playing” plugin has been implemented to display information about the currently playing song.
- Support for the autotools toolkit has been discontinued, with the Meson assembly system used instead.
