In a recent development, the project fpdoom has made significant progress in allowing classic doom, its additions, and other similar games to be played on low-cost button phones using the Spreadtrum chip SC6531 and its variants. Despite the chipset being a decade old, these phones are still in circulation. The latest achievements of the project include:
- Testing on 42 devices to ensure compatibility.
- Implementation of the ability to launch games from an SD card by pressing a specific key (varies by model) during phone reboot. This feature requires adding a small 4KB section to the phone’s firmware without affecting the efficiency of the phone’s OS.
- Creation of a menu for selecting games when loading from an SD card.
- Inclusion of an emulator port for Infones (not the most advanced emulator, but easily portable with a 50% success rate in running games).
- Addition of the port game Wolfenstein 3d for enhanced gaming experience.
