Ubuntu has published the release of the distribution Ubuntu 24.10 “Orcular Oriole”, known for its intermediate releases with support lasting for 9 months (until July 2025). Installation images are available for Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Ubuntukylin, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon.
The main changes:
- The desktop has been updated ahead of GNOME 47 release with new style dialogue windows, improved performance on low-screen systems, hardware acceleration for video encoding when recording screenshots, and revamped file opening dialogs. Additional patches have been included in GNOME Shell and Mutter for stability and performance optimization. The panels now show visualizations for programs in SNAP packages and improved processing for PWA installations with Chromium browser.
- Systems with NVIDIA graphics cards now have the GNOME session on Wayland. Users can still choose the “Ubuntu On Xorg” session for X-server based systems.
