New MacOS Spy Selectively Attacks Apple Computers

A new malicious software targeting Apple MacOS systems has been uncovered by researchers from Kandjii. This malware, named cuckoo, not only infiltrates infected systems but also carries out dangerous espionage functions. Cuckoo is a universal binary file in Mach-O format, compatible with Apple computers running on Intel and ARM processors.

Although the exact methods of cuckoo’s distribution remain unclear, reports suggest that the virus is being spread through websites like “Dumpmedia [.] Com” and “tunesfun [.] Com.” These sites offer both free and paid music applications from streaming services, with DMG files that may contain not only programs but also various system files, documents, and multimedia elements.

Sometimes, these DMG files may be password-protected or feature different sections with varying formatting and encryption options. Users are advised to exercise caution when downloading files from suspicious websites to prevent falling victim to this new malicious software.
