First Alpha Release of ETCD Operator for Kubernetes

Published the first alpha version of the project etcd-oparator, developing tools for simplifying the distribution of distributed storage etcd surrounded by Kubernetes and ETCD clusters control. The tools can solve problems such as deploying nodes, setting up, managing, scaling, and restoration in case of failures. The configuration is set in YAML format. The project code is written in Go and spreads under the license Apache 2.0.

Project created as part of an experiment on organizing people in the Russian-speaking community of Kubernetes and creating an initiative group to write a fully free and controlled by the ETCD community Operator. The essence of the experiment is to create a project from scratch that will develop a community, and check the applicability of international joint development practices in the Russian-speaking community.

The selection of ETCD is due to the fact that it is simultaneously simple and, at the same time, in demand by technology used in many projects. Among the main users, Cozystack and kamaji are noted, focused on the launch of Kubernetes clusters in the native ecosystem for Kubernetes. At the moment, the project has a separate community of 100 participants and about 10 permanent contributors.

The project pursues two main goals:

  • Desire to create a standard solution that will not be controlled by any company.
  • The intention to help the Russian-speaking community learn to work together with Western colleagues on achieving common goals, as well as adopt their best practices in organizing free development.

The project has already been sent a request to join kubernetes-sigs. At the moment, there is also active discussion
