Since the launch of the Compat 2021 initiative and subsequent projects like INTEROP 2022 and Interop 2023, significant improvements have been made to the web platform. This year, a new set of functions and corrections will be implemented, focusing on simplifying daily web development tasks.
One of the key areas of focus for Interop this year is the elimination of inconsistencies in the behavior of Flexbox and Grid, which have revolutionized website layout creation. Although there has been a significant reduction in differences between browsers, some minor discrepancies still exist. Resolving these differences is a priority for this year’s Interop project.
Another noteworthy achievement is the introduction of Subgrid to all major browsers. This was made possible through the collaboration of Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft. Microsoft’s contribution in bringing Subgrid to Chromium in 2023 ensured its availability in browsers based on Chromium, such as Chrome and Edge.
Regarding CSS improvement, the Interop project is dedicating special attention to the introduction of blocks such as Cascade Layers, Psevdoklass: HAS (), and Container Queries. These additions now provide cross-browser compatibility. This year, focus will shift towards CSS Nesting, which aims to enhance code readability and modularity.
Furthermore, the Interop project will address the Dialog HTML element and the new API for Popover. These advancements will simplify working with dialogs and pop-up elements, eliminating the need for complex JavaScript code. Interop 2024 also encompasses improvements in many other aspects, including accessibility, scrollbar styles, HTTPS URLs for WebSocketd, INDEXEDDB, and more, all aimed at enhancing web development and user experience as a whole.
