Fruit Midge Brains Create Record-Breaking Robot

In a fascinating development, a team of scientists has successfully developed a robot that takes inspiration from the tiny brain of a small flying insect. This robot is capable of deftly maneuvering between objects and skillfully avoiding any potential clashes.

Although using the brain of a fruit fly as a model for creating a robot may seem unusual, researchers from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the University of Bilefeld in Germany believed that it could serve as an ideal basis for managing the device. Fruit flies possess simple yet effective orientation skills – they expend minimal effort to fly in a straight line and adeptly change their flight path to avoid obstacles.
