Valve Releases Proton 8.0-5 for Launching Windows-IGR on Linux

Valve published an update for the project Proton 8.0-5, which is designed to enable the launch of Windows game applications on Linux through the Steam catalog. The project is distributed under the BSD license.

Proton allows for the direct running of Windows game applications on the Linux client. It includes DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), which works through DirectX calls to the Vulkan API. It also provides improved support for gaming controllers and the ability to use full-screen mode regardless of supported screen resolutions in games. It supports mechanisms such as “Eventfd Synchronization” and “Futex/FSYNC” to enhance the performance of multi-threaded games.

The new version of Proton includes several changes, such as:

  • Support for expanded dynamic range (HDR) on compatible hardware. Games that now support HDR include: Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, Hogwarts Legacy, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Injustice 2, Alan Wake 2, and Devil May Cry 5.
  • Updates to various packages, including the DXVK layer for broadcasting Vulkan API calls, VKD3D-Proton for improved Direct3D 12 support in Proton, DXVK-NVAPI, and the Wine Mono engine for the .NET platform.
  • Improved support for VKB Gladiator NXT EVO and Virpil Constellation Alpha-R joysticks when the hidraw module is present.
  • Added support for new games including Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes, Welcome to Print, Red Tie Runner, Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
  • Listed several known issues in games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Starfield, Halo Infinite, The Witcher 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 2, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, The Last of Us Part I, Trivia Tricks, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Final Fantasy VIII, Freefall 3050AD, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Remnant: From the Ashes, Deep Rock Galactic, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, Mighty Switch Force!
