News Report: Solus 4.5 Released – Linux Distribution
Solus 4.5, a Linux distribution, has been released. Previously, the dialogue developed desktop budgie, but now it is allocated as an independent project. The next Solus 5 branch will be developed using the technology of the Serpentos distribution. The project’s code is distributed under the GPLV2 license, and the languages of SI and VALA are used for development. The distribution provides building options with BUDGIE, GNOME, KDE Plasma, and XFCE. The ISO-images have a size of 2.7 GB (x86_64).
The package manager used in Solus 4.5 is eopkg, a fork of pisi from Pardus Linux. It allows users to control packets, providing familiar means for installing/removing packages, searching in the repository, and repository management. Packages are categorized into thematic components and subcategories. For example, the network application Firefox is attributed to the Network.web.Browser component, which falls under the category of network applications and the subcategory of applications for the web. The repository offers more than 2000 packages for installation.
The distribution follows a hybrid development model, regularly releasing significant updates that introduce new technologies and improvements. In between, it follows a rolling model for package updates.
