Maxime, resident of Draveil, in Essonne, has not been riding since April in a “car without a license”, or in a “cart”. No, the 16 -year -old prefers to say, like most of those who have taken the plunge, that he has already taken “nearly 6,000 kilometers on the roads of Essonne” in his “without peak”, or in His “Ligier”, named after one of the main manufacturers of these thermal vehicles restrained at 45 km/h. Long confined to an elderly and rural population, the latter now also arouse the enthusiasm of the youngest, which can lead them from the age of 14 since 2018 (against 16 years earlier).

finished the image of the “yogurt pot”, the “light motor quadricycles”, according to their official name, “have become a luxury thing”, estimates Maxime, who describes in passing the equipment of his “without pe. “: central locking, reversing camera, Bluetooth. What make some of his comrades “a little jealous”. He does not regret a second his scooter, which takes the dust in the garage. With him he could not have so much “chain the kilometers on the small roads to go to work, without worrying about the weather, [going to sport, seeing friends, girls …”, continues the young man, who follows a training of learning mechanics. “And we are more reassured to know it in there,” added his father, manager of a business. Gift cost: 15,000 euros.

“Registrations in 14-17 year olds now increase by almost 5 % per year. Their craze for the cart is unequivocal, even if it obviously remains far behind the two wheels”, comments Marie-Laure Nivot, Responsible “Intelligence Markets” at AAA Data, a company specializing in the processing of data from the car fleet. This development is delighted by the manufacturers who work “at the rejuvenation of the image of cars without a license for many years”, says François Ligier, the CEO of the French brand which bears his name. A modernization that allows young people, according to him, to assume today “more than before” to drive in these cars. Of the 16,000 annual vehicles produced by the group (twice as much as ten years ago), “a third” arrives in the hands of minors. The other two thirds are distributed between young urban workers who do not have – the more historic permit and the public of the elderly or with a disability, rather from rural areas.
