In Daghestan, unpublished demonstrations have given rise to clashes with the police in the capital Makhatchkala.

The “partial” mobilization decreed by Vladimir Putin caused demonstrations of an unprecedented scale in Daghestan, the Republic of the southern country which already pays a heavy price for the conflict in Ukraine. For several hours, Sunday, September 25, thousands of demonstrators and members of the security forces clashed, in Makhatchkala, the capital, sometimes violently.

very unusual scenes for Russia have been filmed by witnesses – men hitting police, women organizing themselves to prevent arrests and, on several occasions, automatic weapons salvas drawn by air by air by air Security forces. The small number of people arrested – a hundred – says a lot about the incapacity of the police to face this anger, despite sending reinforcements.

Tensions far exceed the only city of Makhatchkala. Clashes have taken place in other localities, including in villages where residents have sometimes tried to block roads. Fir shots fired in the air were also heard near the village of Endireï. Everywhere, women are on the front line, chanting in particular: “Our children are not fertilizer” or “no to war”.

exceptional protests

Lighter events took place elsewhere in Russia during the weekend, leading to nearly a thousand arrests. These rallies, often led by women – arrested men frequently receive a military convocation – have brought together hundreds of people in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also in the republics housing national minorities – Iakoutie (today Sakha), Bouriatie , Kabardino-Bankarie…

These regions have in common that they have already sent many soldiers to Ukraine, but also to maintain strong solidarity ties, when the rest of Russia is characterized by extreme atomization. More worrying for power, these are also territories where protests are exceptional.

This discontent is maintained by the always continuous flow of information and images showing chaotic and “excessive” mobilization, the very admission of political leaders. It is primarily a question of the call under the flags of people supposed to escape it – students, elderly or sick, without military experience … In certain villages of Siberia, all men have received a summons, which often gives Place to drinking or fights. Monday morning, a man opened fire in a Russian army recruitment center in the city of Oust-Ilimsk, Siberia, seriously injuring a soldier in charge of recruitment.
