Nothing seems to be able to hinder Max Verstappen in his quest for a second title of World Formula 1 champion (F1). Yet left in 10 e position on the starting grid, the Dutch pilot of Red Bull won the Hungarian Grand Prix, Sunday, July 31, after a crazy comeback. He is ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

By signing his second success of rank, the twenty-eighth of his career at the age of 24, Max Verstappen went on a quiet summer vacation. He will return on August 28 at the Belgian Grand Prix, in Spa-Francorchamps, with 80 points ahead of his runner-up in the championship, Charles Leclerc (6 e in Hungarring).

The Ferrari stable, at 2 e and 3 e places at the start with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, was still tangled with the brushes in his strategy. The numerous errors of the Italian team, race after race, lead Charles Leclerc’s hopes to catch up on Max Verstappen.

In Hungary, the choice to put on your car of “hard” tires at 40 e tower (out of 70) was incomprehensible and above all disastrous for the rest of the race. However, the Alpine of Fernando Alonso, struggling with these same gums for a few laps, should have dissuaded Ferrari to try this strategy. Charles Leclerc, then at the top of the Grand Prix, lost his rhythm and his ambitions.

The error ultimately without consequence of Verstappen

The Monegasque was quickly exceeded by Max Verstappen. The first time at 41 e tour, a second time four laps later when he was ironed behind after a tire of the Dutchman, ultimately without consequences. “I don’t have the explanation, I’m not sure what to say, commented, disappointed, Charles Leclerc at the microphone of Canal+. We will have to look again. It’s difficult. It was a Carnage, we stopped five, six laps after [to spare tires]. “

At the end of the day, Charles Leclerc finished 6 e and conceded 17 points on the defending world champion, after having had to abandon last Sunday, at the Grand Prix de France. “After a while, we cannot hope to win the championship if we do shopping like that. We have to improve,” continued the Ferrari driver.

For his part, Mercedes confirmed his renewal. Like last weekend, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took the 2 e and 3 e places. The latter, who went to pole position for the first time in his career, had precisely lost his head of the race for the benefit of Leclerc, at 30 e tower. Russell is still running after his first success in the queen category but allows, with Hamilton, to return to Ferrari’s heels in the manufacturers’ classification (304 points against 334 for the Italian stable). Red Bull is still largely in mind with 431 points.

Summer risks being hectic for Ferrari and Charles Leclerc, who now sees Sergio Perez (Red Bull) in his rear view mirror, with only five points behind in the pilot classification, thanks to his 5 e Place of the day, behind Carlos Sainz (Ferrari).
