Amélie de Montchalin was imperative to win the second round of the legislative elections in Essonne if she wanted to remain Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion in the government of Elisabeth Borne. Totating only 47.3 % of the vote, the presidential coalition candidate falls against the candidate of the new Ecological and Social People’s Union (Nuts), Jérôme Guedj, who brought together 53.7 % of the votes and thus became a deputy for the 6th district of Essonne.

M Me Montchalin should resign because the political risk was not zero for the fifteen candidate ministers. The President of the Republic had announced, as in 2017, that in the event of defeat the unhappy candidates for the deputation would be forced to resign from the government. Rule recalled by Gabriel Attal Sunday June 19 on TF1.

District not favorable

During the first round, Sunday, June 12, the minister was in unfavorable tank (31.46 % of the vote), seven points behind Mr. Guedj (38.31 %). It must be said that the 6 e district of Essonne – where it had been elected in 2017 – was not favorable to her because Jean -Luc Mélenchon had ahead of Emmanuel Macron in the first round of the presidential election , with 30.7 % of votes.

After having succeeded Nathalie Loiseau, on March 31, 2019, as Secretary of State for European Affairs, Amélie de Montchalin was appointed Minister of Public Transformation and Function in July 2020 in the government of Jean Castex. She became Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, an even greater position of responsibility, Friday, May 20, in the government of Elisabeth Borne.

After working on the design of Alain Juppé’s economic program during the right primary in 2016, she joined the Republic En Marche (LRM) the same year, before being elected under the LRM label in 2017, in this same 6th district of Essonne, which she won without having ever exercised a political mandate previously. She quickly blends into her role, appearing as a “techno” figure, a fine connoisseur of economic issues. Without experience in ecology, this convinced liberal pleads for a form of “pragmatism” and for “efficiency of public expenditure”.

strategic position

At the start of her mandate, she was coordinator of the LRM group at the finance committee and became the first woman to occupy such a position in the National Assembly. It supports the abolition of wealth tax, believing that it was an obstacle to investment.

As Minister of Public Transformation and Function, M Me of Montchalin notably led the draft prescription for reform of the higher supervision of the public service, in 2021, which included the transformation of the National School of Administration into a National Institute of Public Service in 2022, the abolition of many senior officials, and the creation of a single body, that of state administrators.

Promoted Minister of Ecological Transition in May 2022 by the new host of Matignon and the President of the Republic, she was imperative to win Sunday June 19 to stay in place in this strategic position.
