Russian gas is becoming scarce in Europe. Since the end of April, the Gazprom company has already cut the valves to several countries (Bulgaria, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands), on the grounds that they refused to convert their payment into rubles. From now on, France, Germany and Italy have a drying up of deliveries. Three countries whose leaders were just in kyiv on Thursday, June 16, to assert the support of the European Union to Ukraine, invaded by Russian troops on February 24.

Since June 15, France no longer receives new Russian molecules per gas pipeline. The main manager of the French gas transport network, GRTGAZ, said it two days later, noting “the interruption of the physical flow between France and Germany”. However, interconnection with Germany made the connection with Russian exports. Gazprom had already announced, on June 14, reduce deliveries to Germany by 40 % by Nord Stream 1, a long pipe under the Baltic Sea.

Officially, the Russian firm has attributed the reduction of deliveries to Germany to technical problems. Unofficially, it would be a “political decision” of Moscow against the countries deemed inumic, criticized, on Wednesday, June 15, Robert Habeck, the Minister of the Economy and the German climate. The Head of Italian government, Mario Draghi, also denounced “political use of gas”. Until reproach “lies” to Gazprom, which will only deliver half of the volumes requested Friday by ENI, reported the Italian energy supplier.

first supplier, Norway

In France, the Ministry of Ecological Transition claims not to see a link between the visit of President Emmanuel Macron to kyiv and the interruption of the flow. “For months, Europe has been receiving less and less Russian gas,” said the Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher. According to her, “this reduction in deliveries does not jeopardize the security of supply of our country”.

On the one hand, gas needs are less lively in June than in winter, the main heating period. On the other hand, France has a more diverse supply than Germany. In 2020, its first supplier Norway was, not Russia: 36 % and 17 % of gross entries respectively. The ministry is not yet able to transmit more recent data.

Since the beginning of 2022, the flow between France and Germany already represented only 60 gigawattheures per day. “Or only 10 % of the capacity of the interconnection point”, according to GRTGAZ.
