Roscosmos satellites follow floods and hurricanes around world

Roskosmos State Corporation continues to monitor emergency situations by the funds of the Russian orbital grouping. For a week, Russian data from the Earth’s remote sensing in the amount of about 1.4 million square meters was transferred to the EMERCOM of Russia. km, and in the international charter on space and large catastrophes – 11 thousand square meters. km.

Earth remote sensing technologies from space is an indispensable tool for learning and continuous monitoring of our planet that helps to effectively use and manage its resources. Modern technologies find the application in almost all spheres of our life.

In the period from February 11 to February 18, 2022, the following emergencies were monitored at the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia:

  • flooding in the Krasnodar Territory;
  • Search for a missing vessel in the Sea of Okhotsk;
  • Ice crossings in several regions of the Russian Federation;
  • spill of diesel fuel in the Sakhalin region;
  • Threat of flooding in the Republic of Khakassia;
  • hydrological situation in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

As part of the activities of the International Charter on Space and Large Catastrophes during the reporting period, the following emergencies were monitored:

  • Hurricane and Flood in Malawi;
  • Flood and landslide in Ecuador;
  • Oil spill in Peru;
  • Flood and landslide in Brazil.

On the basis of media reports on natural and man-made catastrophes around the world, the space survey of the following events was planned:

  • monitoring of the effect of explosion on the oil installation in Nigeria;
  • Hurricane monitoring in Madagascar;
  • monitoring of volcanic activity in the Sakhalin region;
  • Monitoring of flooding in the Krasnodar Territory ;
  • Monitoring the consequences of the passage of the cyclone in New Zealand.

In the framework of the monitoring of the flood and fire hazardous situation in the Russian Federation, Russian data of space survey in the amount of about 201 thousand square meters were transferred to representatives of regional authorities. km. At the same time, according to applications, initiated as a result of searching in the media news reports on natural and man-made catastrophes around the world, data in the amount of about 160 thousand square meters were obtained. km.

Roscosmos State Corporation supports prompt interaction with the EMERCOM of Russia for a timely response to the emergence of a flood and fire-hazardous situation and the implementation of space monitoring of the affected territories. Today, the technology developed by Roskosmos enterprises and methods for using remote sensing of the Earth can offer unique solutions to ensure safety, increase the efficiency of exploration and production of natural resources, introducing the latest practices in agriculture, prevent emergency situations and eliminate their consequences, environmental protection and change control climate.
