South Korea paid Iran’s debt before UN

The Government of South Korea repaid Iran’s debt on contributions to the UN in the amount of 18 million dollars. This is reported by TASS with reference to the South Korean Ministry of Planning and Finance.

It is noted that on January 13, Tehran asked Seoul to pay the contribution of the Islamic Republic to the UN to avoid loss of voting rights in the General Assembly due to debt. January 21, payment was carried out at the expense of Iranian assets frozen in South Korean banks in connection with US sanctions.

Previously, the UN deputygencies for political issues of Rosemary Dikarlo called on the United States to remove sanctions from Iran, as required by the agreement on a joint comprehensive action plan (CSPD). According to her, it is also necessary to expand the exceptions from Washington, which apply to certain types of peaceful nuclear activities at Busheter facilities, Fondo and on the Arak reactor, as well as for the export of uranium enriched from Iran in exchange for natural uranium.

Iran and major nuclear powers are trying to resume the transaction 2015 on the joint comprehensive action plan (UNDPD), according to which Tehran limited its nuclear program in exchange for exemption from US economic sanctions, the EU and the UN. The United States came out of the transaction in 2018 during the presidential period of Donald Trump.
