India has resulted in foreign funding from a Charity organization founded by Mother Teresa, announced on Saturday, January 8 Sunita Kumar, spokesperson for the missionaries of charity, a few days after an interruption interpreted as additional evidence of harassment Christians under the Hindu Nationalist Government.

On December 25, the charity had been denied the renewal of his license allowing him to receive foreign funding, according to the Ministry of the Interior Indian . The decision emphasized that the missionaries of charity no longer fulfilled the eligibility conditions, without giving more details. This lapel had occurred a few weeks after the opening of a survey of the missionaries of charity in the State of Gujarat (West of India) for “forced conversions”. The organization had fiercely denied such facts.

The missionaries of charity are a Catholic order founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa, Roman Catholic religious who lived and worked in India for most of his life, helping the poor in the city of Calcutta. The nun, Nobel Peace Prize 1979 and Canonized by Pope Francis in 2016, has devoted a large part of his life to help the poorest in India.

Discrimination against religious minorities

The organization manages foster homes through India. According to the Daily Hindu, it obtained approximately $ 750 million (€ 662 million) of foreign funding during the year 2020-2021. The Government of Narendra Modi has been accused of blocking access to foreign financing of charitable organizations and defense rights working in India.

Last week, the Indian branch of the Oxfam NGO stated to block access to foreign funds, preventing it with significant consequences for its humanitarian activities. Amnesty International announced in 2020 cessing its operations in India after freezing of its bank accounts by the government.

Human rights activists are also concerned about the increase in discrimination and violence of religious minorities since the arrival of Mr. Modi in 2014. The government denies all “Hindutva “, Hindu hegemony project, and insists on equal rights between all religions.
