Scientists have found a way to revive dead batteries

American scientists told about the method of “revitalizing” old batteries using lithium activation. The study was published in the scientific journal Nature.

Specialists from the National Acceleration Laboratory (SLAC), the Ministry of Energy and Stanford University found the possibility of improving old batteries and extend the life of lithium-ion batteries. Potentially this invention will increase the autonomy of batteries and extend their life.

In scientific work, it is said that as aging in batteries, fragments of the so-called dead lithium are accumulated. Lithium ions become inactive, which is why the battery life of the batteries in smartphones, electric vehicles and other techniques is reduced. With the help of a special way of charging, you can move inactive fragments by stimulating the movement of lithium ions in the direction to the anode.

“It looks like a very slow worm that promotes his head forward and pulls the tail to move the nanometer for a nanometer,” said the behavior of the inactive Lithium Ion, Professor of Stanford University and Slac Yi Tsui (Yi Cui). As a result, experts managed to organize the charging of the old battery in such a way that its work time increased by 30 percent.

“Our results are of great importance for the design and development of more reliable lithium-metal batteries,” the author of the Fang Liu study emphasized the author. According to him, in the future it is possible to achieve more efficient batteries designed for a long service life.

In mid-December, IBM and Samsung specialists described the prospect of achieving the weekly autonomy of the smartphone. The breakthrough took place due to the vertical location of the transistors in the chips instead of the usual horizontal.
