Aung San Suu Kyi, aged 76, has been held since the generals reversed his government in the early hours of the 1st February, bringing an end to a brief democratic parenthesis in Burma.

Propurification of charges

The Junta regularly accused the counts against it, including the violation of the law on official secrets, corruption and electoral fraud. It risks dozens of prison years if it is convicted of all charges.

The hearings are held in camera. Neither the Junta nor the official press communicate information on the trials for Aung San Suu Kyi, whose partisans denounce political maneuvers. Suu Kyi’s lawyers have recently been prohibited from talking to the media.

According to a local human rights NGO, more than 1,300 people were killed and more than 10,000 arrested as part of dissenting repression since the coup.
