System “Light” provides connection of space tourists

The Multifunctional Space Relay System “Light” successfully completed the targets during the launch and docking of the piloted ship “Union of MS-20” with the Russian segment of the International Space Station, and also continues to provide a communication channel during the crew to the ISS.

December 8, 2021 at 10:38 Moscow time from the Baikonur cosmodrome, a successful launch of the Soyuz-2.1A carrier missile with a piloted ship “Union MS-20” was performed. At 16:41 Moscow time the crew as part of the astronaut Roscosmos Alexander Misurkin, as well as participants in the space flight from Japan, Yusaka Maesava and Jozo Hirano went on board the ISS.

After the exit of the piloted ship “Union MS-20” from the zone of the radio abuse of ground-based communication (11th minute), transferring telemetry information to the Center for Flight Management TsNIIMASH (part of the state corporation “Roskosmos”) and the issuance of control teams on board The ship was carried out through the means of ground and space segments of the MKSR “Light” (operator – “Satellite system” Goning “, enters Roscosmos).

While the crew at the ISS system, the Light system performs a comprehensive task to provide the crew of a broadband information transmission channel with the ability to carry out voice and video communications, as well as data volume transmission in accordance with the installed work program. In the organization of a broadband channel with the Russian segment of the ISS, all three spacecraft are involved: “beam-5a”, “beam-5b”, “beam-5v”, onboard equipment installed at the station and means of a ground relay setting complex.

Using the Russian Ray Relay System allows you to organize an exchange of information between the Russian ISS and MCU segment without attracting the American TDRSS relay system.

Flight of the 20th “tourist” mission passes against the background of the flight of the main expedition of the ISS-66. The planned duration of the crew flight with tourists is 12 days.
