India is the friend of Europe, the United States … and Russia. The Asian giant, which has always made the choice to play on several paintings, welcomed Monday 6 December Vladimir Putin on the occasion of 21 e Annual Summit India-Russia, an initiative launched in 2000 , under the presidency of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This five-hour zipper of the Russian President in the Indian capital is an important step in the consolidation of the relationship between the two countries, while Narendra Modi has established in recent years with the former US President Donald Trump and His Democratic successor, Joe Biden, and while the region is subject to considerable geopolitical upheavals.

To emphasize the importance of the meeting, the Indians argued that the Russian leader was seconding only from the Pandemic of Covid-19. In July, he went to Geneva to meet the US president as part of a bilateral summit, but he did not participate in the G20 in Italy or Glasgow COP26 in November.

The visit has not led to major military contracts, apart from an agreement for the manufacture of 600,000 Russian AK-203 assault rifles in India, Uttar Pradesh, and the renewal of the ‘Militaro-technical cooperation agreement for a new period of ten years, until 2031. The essential was already concluded. India has purchased Russian S-400 in 2018, the long-range anti-aircraft defense system, for $ 5.5 billion. The Indian Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, indicated that deliveries were being routing. The S-400 should first be deployed near the western border to deal with Pakistan and China’s threats.

“Sovereign Decision”

New Delhi maintained this contract, defending “a sovereign decision”, despite the threats of Washington which, under the US law Countering America’s adversaries through Sanction Act, sanctions the purchases of Russian weapons by any country or entities.

“We attended attempts from the United States to undermine this cooperation and to force India to obey the American orders and to follow the American vision of how this region should be developed. Our Indian friends clearly and firmly explained that they are a sovereign country and that they will decide on the weapons they will buy and who will be a partner of India in this area and in others, “said Russian Minister Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov.
