Safety researchers from cryptocurrency exchange Kraken Demonstrated Simple and cheap way to create a fingerprint clone by photograph using a conventional laser printer, joinery glue and girlfriend. It is noted that the resulting cast made it possible to bypass the protection of biometric authentication on fingerprint and unlock the existing OPAD tablet, MacBook Pro laptop and a hardware cryptocurrency wallet.
The methods of recreation of fingerprints have long been known for a long time, but they usually demanded special skills or availability of expensive equipment, such as a 3D printer. The cost of creating a clone in the proposed method is placed in approximately 5 dollars. At the first stage, a typical smartphone is photographed by a print left on any smooth surface, for example, on a glossy screen / laptop cover or smartphone.
Then in any graphic editor performs an operation of increasing the contrast of the papillary pattern, creating the negative, cropping and converting the image to the black and white format. After that, the prepared image is printed on a typical laser printer, but instead of paper use a acetate sheet – a transparent film used for the manufacture of stencils, stickers and cards. In the process of printing, the toner forms textured convex strokes on acetate sheet, repeating papillar pattern.
In the last stage, a thin layer of joinery glue is applied to the film, which after drying forms an elastic substance repeating volumetric papillar pattern. By placing the resulting film on the finger it turned out to be possible to unlock most of the tested biometric test systems for fingerprints.
