The sixteenth edition of the Festival Cinebanlieue opened, Wednesday, November 10, at the cinema The Screen of Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis), with the preview projection of supreme, fifth feature film ‘Audrey Estrougo on the beginnings of the French rap group NTM. Precisely shot in the 93, by a director who has also lived there, the film brings us back to the end of the 1980s, in these suburbs abandoned by the public authorities and whose youth feel completely abandoned, ignored, despised and unfairly abused (by the police, in particular). Thirty years later, nothing has changed, “If it may be at the time young people hoped that things could still change, while today they seem more disillusioned,” said Sandor Funtek (Kool Shen interpreter), present on stage, with the entire film team.

We wanted to show something other than violence: a more complex reality

However, energy, there are some, envy and talent too, just as we encourage them and helps themselves. As a result, since its creation in 2006, the Festival Fébanlieue, whose vocation remains unchanged for more than fifteen years: highlight the films shot in the popular neighborhoods by those who come from. “With this festival, we have chosen to counter a majority speech that tended to simplify the purpose, explains its founder and director, Aurélie Cardin, also historian and director. We wanted to show something other than violence: a more complex reality. Different imaginary and especially true cinema. That those who could not access schools, and who most of the time were self-taught, can access their dream. For those have a huge appetite to make movies. ”

Every year, in addition to many feature-films, the festival therefore has a selection of short formats developed by young directors aged 18 to 35 years. This year, on the five hundred and thirteen films sent, from France and Overseas, between June and September, twenty-four were selected – of which eleven are in competition. All will be projected in partner cinemas: the Screen of Saint-Denis, the studio, in Aubervilliers, and common image, in Saint-Ouen. The awards ceremony provided on Thursday, November 18, at the CIÉE CIÉE in the 18 e Arrondissement de Paris. Among the awards awarded: the Forebanlieue Grand Prix, which allocates 20,000 euros to the laureate, the France Télévisions price (by which the public group is committed to buying, disseminating and marketing the award-winning short film).
