Scientists predicted an increase in harmful emissions in near future

Greenhouse gas emissions in 2021 will increase by about five percent and return the level that was recorded before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Research results are presented in the Earth System Science Data log.

One of the scientists who conducted a study, Professor of the University of Extector in the UK, Pierre Fridlings stated that an increase in harmful emissions in the near future until the previous indicators talks about returning to the “old hydrocarbon economy”.

Friedlings and his colleagues on the international project Global Carbon predicted that the main increase in emissions would have to four sources. It is assumed that emissions in the United States and the EU will grow by about 7.6 percent this year, and in China and in India – by 4 and 12.6 percent, respectively. At the same time, in other countries of the world, the indicators will not exceed the level of 2019.

“those investments in the green sector that were laid in plans to restore the economy of many countries after a pandemic, turned out to be clearly not enough to avoid sharp growth of emissions,” the researcher emphasized.

The rapid return of emissions to past indicators, according to FriedlingStein and his colleagues, causes questions if humanity will be able to keep global warming at a rate of 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the 21st century.

Previously leading countries of the world agreed to rescue the planet. According to the results of the G20 summit, States assumed obligations to limit the pace of global warming. It is planned to maintain at the level of 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial level.
