The crime is declining in many areas, and the inhabitants of Ile-de-France have less and less fear. This is the conclusion of a thorough investigation unveiled Thursday 21 October by the Paris Region Institute, an organization of studies depends on the regional council. A rather unexpected result, while the theme of insecurity prominently in the presidential pre-campaign, and part of the right mentioned repeatedly the rising crime in the first French region, and the need ‘respond more firmly.

Since 2001, the Paris Region Institute conducts every two years a detailed survey on actual harm to individuals or to their home, and the feeling of insecurity in the Ile-de-France. This year, some 8,000 people over 15 years old were interviewed in this context, in January and February 2021. The first results show a marked decline of the facts experienced by Parisians, and decreased anxiety. A calming partly related to pandemic Covid-19 and containments, which reduces the activity of offenders.

Only 45% of Parisians surveyed in January and February declare such fear personally, against 47.7% in 2019. The proportion of subjects people to this feeling and is the same level as in 2017, it ‘ is to say at the lowest point recorded since the beginning of the investigation. In 2001, nearly 54% of people claimed to have personally sometimes fear. The proportion of those who experience this feeling in transport fell to 38%, again the lowest level since 2001. Similarly, respondents who are afraid to go out alone at night in their neighborhood are only 19%, against 29 % in 2001.

“The Parisians are also less likely to mention street cleanliness problems, lighting or maintenance of buildings and green spaces, the presence of youth gangs annoying, vandalism, and drug” raises the note published Thursday.

politics plays a significant role

The people of Paris and its suburbs have good reason to feel less threatening. By emptying the region of its tourists and often confining residents to their homes, the health crisis curbed crime. In Paris, for example, damage to persons fell by 16% in 2020, and those to property, 27%. The pickpocketing even dropped 30%, while robberies have plunged 39%.

This lull is reflected in the remarks of those surveyed by the Paris Institute Region. Thus, only 32% of households surveyed reported being victims of an attack against their property at least once in the last three years. They were 39% two years earlier. The downward trend “is for most categories of violations,” note the experts of the Institute, citing theft with or without violence, car damage, etc. Only the increase in sexual assaults is confirmed.
