New AFAR modules for orbital high-speed radar

The new receiving-transmitting module of the next generation of the next generation is developed in the “Russian Space Systems” holding (RCS, is included in the state corporation “Roskosmos”). This development will become the main intellectual part of the promising domestic Afar for space, will increase the speed and quality of information interaction with onboard systems of promising spacecraft.

New Modules for AFAR with a phase rebuilding function and an amplitude of super-frequency (microwave) signal are designed for high-speed radiolines and transmission to land of all kinds of data from Russian satellites – including bulk information from the target removal remote sensing equipment of the Earth. Modules are created on the electronic component base of own development of the RCC for the latest technologies in cosmic electronics. At the same time, the developers “For the future” taking into account requirements for quality, resistance, dimensions, weight of the elements created: for example, the size of the phasing boards in a new module does not exceed 30 × 20 millimeters. This creates the possibility of their serial use in orbital groups from small spacecraft weighing up to 200 kg.

Module components are mounted on microwave cards created in the RCC based on advanced high-tech LTCC (LOW Temperature CO-FIRED CERAMIC) – low-temperature co-burned ceramics. Advanced materials, set and layout of the elements of the module are selected in such a way that with low power consumption it ensure the impeccable operation of emitters – microforn antennas, which, when transmitting and receiving signals, will continuously expose to the rigid operating conditions of the open space. The design of the new AFAR assumes the installation of 144 of such emitters, the mass of the entire antenna assembled by barely exceed 15 kilograms, power consumption will be only 140 watts.

Deputy Head of the Department for the Development of Side Afar RCS Mikhail Moiseyev: “The presence of Russia with AFAR devices will reduce the” classic “antennas with mechanical drives and move to the formation of an antenna’s orientation with the help of electronic perestroika, thereby giving fundamentally different qualities to our satellites . In addition, new modules for a phased lattice will double the speed of scanning and receiving data, ensure the stability of information transfer from the Earth. We strive to ensure that the new development has significantly reduced the dimensions, mass and energy consumption for the formation and reception of signals at high reliability and impeccable quality of Russian space for space. “
