Rosneft completed a research expedition in Arctic

Research Expedition Rosneft, organized as part of a corporate program for the preservation of biodiversity of arctic ecosystems. During the month, specialists of the Arctic Scientific Center of the Company and the Institute for Ecology Problems and Evolution named after A.N. Seversow RAS conducted monitoring and study of the population of polar bears and the Atlantic fuddle of the walrus, the NK reports.

In the course of the expedition, scientists examined the 34st islands of the archipelago of Franz Joseph and New Earth, as well as the Island of Victoria on the north-western border of Russian Arctic territories. With the help of unmanned aircraft, the number of walruses on the largest fokers was carried out. According to preliminary data, 7145 animals were recorded that twice the accounting of last year in the same territories. The biggest in the entire history of Arctic research of the walrus was found on the island of Eva-Liv (Franz Joseph Earth archipelago).

At the cape of desire (New Earth Archipelago), work was carried out on the study of the White Bear. Animals were examined using the method of distance immobilization that does not represent the threat of their lives and health. On two females they had satellite collars who would allow scientists to remotely track the paths of migration of bears.

Expedition participants around the clock conducted passing ship observations of marine mammals and birds. At the transition between the Islands of the Earth Franz Joseph in the Graham Bell Island, a large flock of Belong was recorded – about a thousand animals. And in the area of ​​the island of Hoffman – a flock of the Voice of the Seagull, which is rarely seen in this region.

Research work made with the best global practices will allow scientists to expand and update data on the population of the studied species and develop activities for their protection.
