Russia modernizes Soviet tanks

Russian engineers are ready to modernize Soviet T-55 tanks for foreign operators. “Omsktransmash” (enters the “Uralvagonzavod” concern “ROSTEKH”) conducts negotiations with potential customers. This is reported by TASS with reference to the general director of the enterprise Igor Lobov.

According to him, “Omsktransmash” has already developed the modification options for T-55 tank. Representatives of the enterprise are negotiating with customers. If the need for the modernization of T-55, the plant is ready to upgrade these machines.

T-55 tank has become the development of T-54 – the production of a new car began in 1958. For 21 years, more than 23 thousand tanks were released, some of which were transferred to foreign operators. Until now, T-55 is operated in many countries, including Angola, Vietnam, Peru and Romania.

Tank has repeatedly upgraded foreign manufacturers. Thus, the American company Teledyne Continental Motors upgraded the Egyptian T-54, equipping them with a British gun and an American engine. In turn, Romania uses TR-580 tanks, which are T-55 with an elongated body, a new tower and the engine.

In the USSR and Russia, many modifications of T-55 were also developed. So, the T-55M6 is T-55 with an elongated case, a new engine and a tower from T-72B tank.

Previously, Omsktransmash representatives declared their readiness to modernize the Soviet tanks of the T-80U of foreign operators. In addition to Russia, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea and Cyprus are exploited this car.
