Thailand forbade use of sunscreen for saving corals

Thailand Nature Department has banned the use of sunscreen in the territory of national marine parks to save corals. The violates of this rule threatens a fine of up to 100 thousand baht or three thousand dollars, writes portal Phys.org.

Experts explained that the corals harm some substances as part of sunscreen. In particular, oxybenzon, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidenecuphor and butylparaben, which make it difficult to reproduce corals and contribute to discoloration.

Scientists assume that due to the increased concentration of dangerous compounds, most of the corals in the Mayan Gulf, Phi-Lech Island, were killed. This place has acquired fame due to the appearance in the picture “Beach”. In 2018, the bay was closed to visit tourists.

In total, 21 National Marine Park is located on the territory of Thailand, and three more at the moment are equipped. These reserves are popular among tourists attractions, so the government is striving to save them.

Earlier, a similar ban on the use of sunscreen introduced the American state of Hawaii. According to environmental status, every day in water is over 200 liters of tanning cream, which destroy the most important tourist attractions of the state – coral reefs.
