In Russia, the carbon units trading system is only formed. For its operation, it is necessary to develop the procedure for verifying the results of climate projects and maintaining the register of carbon units. Then companies that invest in Russian climatic projects will be able to make a profit, RIA Novosti told Novosti in the Center for Strategic Developments (CSR).
“Carbon units are confirmation of reducing greenhouse gas emissions or increase their absorption as a result of the implementation of the climate project, as well as, in a number of systems – emission permits,” explained the head of the “Climate and Green Energy” CSR Irina Pominova.
Since one carbon unit is equivalent to a ton of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, “to trade will be trading.” After the implementation of the climate project, the company will be able to sell the carbon units received, and buyers are used to reduce the carbon footprint or compliance with the installed quotas for greenhouse gas emissions.
On plans to organize in Russia the trade market by carbon units said President Vladimir Putin on PMEF-2021. In the Sakhalin region, they plan to launch a pilot project. For this, Putin called on the company to invest in Russian climatic projects, as it will be more profitable. According to him, revenue from the implementation of projects in the climate industry will exceed 50 billion dollars a year.
