Rosneft estimated possibility of carbon-neutral hydrogen production

Following the results of 2020, the volume of hydrogen production at Rosneft enterprises amounted to about 400 thousand tons, taking into account overseas assets. Hydrogen is made for the company’s own reference purposes, which eliminates commercial risks. About this “Lente.ru” reported in the press service of Rosneft.

Rosneft became the first Russian company, which presented a carbon management plan until 2035. As part of this plan, the company plans to reduce emissions in oil and gas produce by 30 percent, reach the intensity of methane emissions below 0.25 percent and prevent greenhouse gas emissions in the amount of 20 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Rosneft also worries the possibility of minimizing the carbon trace in the production of hydrogen. Now the plant for the production of hydrogen is almost all processing plants of the company.

In the framework of the carbon management plan until 2035, Rosneft will consider the possibility of using technologies, disposal and carbon storage (CCS / CCU) on the existing hydrogen installations. These technologies will significantly reduce emissions and proceed to the production of “blue” hydrogen.

The plan provides for the achievement of key purposes: preventing greenhouse gas emissions in the amount of up to 20 million tons of CO2 equivalent, reducing the intensity of emissions in oil and gas produce by 30 percent, achieving the intensity of methane emissions below 0.25 percent, as well as zero routine incineration of associated gas.
