Italian ambassador killed in attack on convoy in DR Congo

Italian Ambassador Luca Attanasio has died in an armed attack on a UN convoy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry noted that the incident took place in the city of Goma, the attack also killed a soldier of the Carabinieri corps accompanying Attanasio. “The ambassador and the soldiers of the Carabinieri corps were driving in a convoy of MONUSCO, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the ministry said in a communiqué.

Reuters clarifies that the incident took place in the eastern part of the country.
