Moldova: Russian diplomat was suspected of attempting to illegally export currency

The Moldovan border police opened a criminal case on illegal export of foreign currency against the Russian diplomat. This was reported by “Interfax” with reference to the press secretary of the department Raisa Nowitski.

She did not give the name of the suspect, but noted that when the man crossed the checkpoint at the Chisinau airport, the special detector’s sensors were triggered. When the police demanded that the Foreign Ministry representative show the contents of his bag, he refused, citing diplomatic immunity.

Later, the border guards still managed to study the contents of hand luggage. They found there packages with undeclared currency in the amount of 50 thousand dollars. According to Moldovan legislation, it is forbidden to export from the country without a declaration currency in an amount exceeding ten thousand euros in equivalent.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet commented on the incident. The further fate of the diplomat is still unknown.
