Parliament of Moldova lowered retirement age

The Parliament of Moldova in the second and final reading approved the draft law on reducing the retirement age to 62 years for men and 57 years for women. Speaker Zinaida Grechany announced this on December 16, reports RIA Novosti .

54 deputies voted for the document. Once signed by the President, it will enter into force on January 1, 2021.

The opposition said that the bill will increase the number of pensioners and will not allow raising pensions.

In 2016, under the President Nicolae Timofti Moldova raised the retirement age for men and women under 63 years old. The current head of state Igor Dodon expressed the hope that his last decree would be to reduce the retirement age .

On November 15, the second round of presidential elections was held in Moldova. It was won by ex-premier Maia Sandu, gaining 57.75 percent of the vote. She was ahead of Dodon, who received 42.25 percent. Sandu’s inauguration is scheduled for December 24.
