Kostroma Resident Gets 7.5 Years for Harmful Program Development

A resident of Kostroma has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for his involvement in the development of hacker programs that aided the theft of over 2 billion rubles from electronic accounts of residents of different regions of Russia. According to the regional department of the FSB, the young man was a member of an organized criminal group that used malicious software modules developed by him to carry out the crime.

The hacker received a monthly monetary reward from the organizer of the criminal group, ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 US dollars. The group’s activities were discovered by the Federal Security Service, who put an end to their operations.

The official representative of the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Kostroma Region, Alexander The Theological, said, “The unlawful activity of a resident of the region, which was part of an organized criminal community operating in the territory of 14 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, was suppressed. The damage from unlawful activities amounted to more than 2 billion rubles”.

This is not the first time a hacker has been arrested in Kostroma. In 2016, the Dmitrievsky District Court of Kostroma sentenced a 37-year-old hacker to prison for his involvement in the theft of funds in the amount of more than 1.2 billion rubles from the accounts of several banks.
