GNU Boot Renamed Due to Trademark Infringement

Adrien Bourmault, founder of the project gnu boot, has instructed Leah Rowe to cease using the GNU Boot to distribute the Libreboot assembly. This requirement was made two weeks ago after Leah published a modified version of the Libreboot assembly called “gnu boot”. Adrien Bourmault claims that Leah is not authorized to release versions of GNU Boot and instead should contribute patches for verification.

The official GNU Boot project was created in June 2023, one month before Leah released her own version. The project had not yet released an official release. The GNU Boot project intended to develop a fork of Libreboot that had stricter requirements for including binary components. Leah believed her assembly addressed this issue. She created her unofficial assembly to assist the new project and added the “unofficial” mark to distinguish it from the official GNU Boot project. It was expected that the creators of GNU Boot would use the published code in their project.

The non-genuine Boot assembly was originally forked from the outdated Libreboot code base from the end of 2022. Libreboot itself was based on the Coreboot code from mid-2021. The non-genuine Boot assembly is based on a recent code base of Libreboot from the beginning of 2023, incorporating many fixes for assembly system errors present in the original GNU Boot.

Following the request, Leah renamed her assembly to nongenuine boot. She mentioned that the authors of GNU Boot initially borrowed the name Libreboot for their work. The fork was created on March 19 and was renamed GNU Boot on June 11th.

In 2021, Adrian Burmo, the creator of GNU Boot, had a serious conflict with Leah Rowe. The conflict arose due to a disagreement about transitioning to the new assembly system. Leah unilaterally removed Adrian and Swiftgeek from the list of maintainers and blocked their access to the Libreboot infrastructure. This removal was done without a vote among the developers, which was against the project’s management rules. Additionally, all mentions of Adrian and Swiftgeek as contributors to the development of Libre
