Cherepovets Minibus Plunges into Anarchy Due to Hackers

In Cherepovets, hackers deface city’s transport tracking service

In Cherepovets, an unusual incident has occurred related to cybersecurity. Hackers hacked the transport tracking service, which recently launched the Center for Mobile Information Solutions and Technologies (Tskirit). The service allows passengers to see the location of public transport on the map, as well as receive information about the schedule and routes. To do this, just scan the QR code located at the stop.

However, on the night of August 24 to 25, the attackers gained access to the service and changed the names of the city streets. At the same time, they used anti-Russian and offensive expressions that we will not quote. Some of them can be considered as extremist or calls for violence. According to eyewitnesses, hackers also changed the service logo to the symbol of anarchy.

The townspeople found hacking on the morning of August 25 and began to actively share screenshots on social networks. Some of them expressed indignation and bewilderment about what happened, others laughed at the situation and joked that the hackers made the city more interesting. However, the majority agreed that this is a serious safety violation and unacceptable interference in the work of city services.

Representatives of Tskirit confirmed the fact of the attack and said that they are taking all the necessary measures to eliminate the consequences and prevent the repetition of such incidents. They also apologized to the townspeople for the inconvenience and asked not to use the service until the work was completely restored. As of the time of writing this news, the transport tracking service from Tsmith was temporarily unavailable.

Cherepovets City Hall is also aware of what happened and intends to figure out the situation. Perhaps a criminal case will be instituted under Article 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Unlawful access to computer information.” This article provides for a penalty of up to 300 thousand rubles or imprisonment up to four years.
