Mark Harmstone (Mark Harmstone), author of the WinBtrfs project, published release of the operating system Moxnox 1.0, in development since 2022 as a hobby. Moxnox is presented as an operating system created with an eye on Windows NT, providing compatibility with POSIX standards, using the Btrfs file system and reaching the level of self-hosting. The project has about 130 thousand lines of code in C++ and distributed under the GPL (kernel and base programs), LGPL (libraries) and MIT (modules) licenses. Supports assembly for x86-64-v3 and ARMv8.1 architectures (can run on Raspberry Pi 5 board).
System calls and low-level interfaces in the kernel are implemented in the image of Windows NT, but the structure of the kernel and related components differ from Windows NT. Provides the ability to run GNU environment components and programs written for Unix-like systems. The executable file format is PE, libraries have a dll extension, and programs have an exe extension.
Supported hardware devices:
- Block devices: NVMe, SATA, SDHCI (SD cards), virtio-block and USB drives.
- Network cards: virtio-net, RTL8168, RTL8125.
- Devices Input: virtio-input, USB HID, PS/2 keyboards and mice.
- Graphics: virtio-gpu, GOP framebuffer, VBE, VGA console.
- Console: virtio-console, x86 serial port, PL011 ARM.
- USB: XHCI.
Currently in Moxnox 642 of the approximately 1200 functions described in the POSIX 2024 standard are implemented, but this is enough to work with projects such as gcc, bash, mesa, openssh, openssl, perl, python and rust. The system library is composed of functions gnulib, mathematical and cryptographic functions from musl, functions for working with regular expressions from tre, and functions like printf from mingw. Self-assembly is supported, allowing you to compile Moxnox from a Moxnox-based environment. Running Windows programs is not yet supported, but in the future they intend to use the Win32 API implementation from Wine to launch them.
