GhostBSD 26.1 Release

The latest release of the desktop-oriented distribution GhostBSD 26.01 has been presented, based on FreeBSD 15 and offering custom builds with Gershwin, MATE, and Xfce environments. GhostBSD utilizes the ZFS file system by default and supports both Live mode and installation on a hard drive using its own ginstall installer, written in Python. The boot images are generated for the x86_64 architecture.

Some key updates in the new version include:

  • X.Org Server being replaced by a fork of XLibre, citing concerns about the abandoned nature of the X.Org project and the shift towards implementing Wayland by Red Hat. The X.Org maintainers’ actions towards XLibre have been deemed destructive and irrational.
  • The transition to FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE from FreeBSD 14.2.
  • Enabling the zsh command interpreter by default.
  • Adding support for VPN WireGuard and Enterprise WPA (802.1X/EAP) to the NetworkMGR configurator.
  • Updating the Update Station update manager to support updating between different major boot versions environments.
  • Updating the theme and set of icons.
