Linux 7.1 Kernel Adds New NTFS Driver

Linus Torvalds has accepted into the Linux 7.1 kernel, a set of patches with a new implementation of the NTFS file system, developed under the name ntfsplus. The new driver is included under the name “ntfs”, which was previously used to remove the old read-only driver from the kernel. The ntfsplus driver was developed by Namjae Jeon (Namjae Jeon), member of the Samba project, maintainer EXFAT driver and KSMBD server in the Linux kernel.

Development of ntfsplus began in 2022 after the publication of a report on driver maintenance problems NTFS3, developed by Paragon Software and shipped as of kernel 5.15, replacing the old abandoned NTFS driver. From November 2021 to June 2022, ntfs3 developers stopped communicating and reviewing patches, but then resumed maintenance and published a set of fixes, which was included in the 5.19 kernel. Since then, changes for the latest versions of the kernel have been released regularly and, among other things, a fairly large set of improvements and fixes has been adopted into kernel 7.0.
